WHAT IS AN OPTOMETRIST?
Optometrists are health care professionals specifically educated, clinically trained, and licensed to examine, diagnose, and treat the eye and vision system. They are skilled clinicians in eye and vision problems and provide treatment which may include medications, glasses, contact lenses, vision training, and low-vision aids.

Optometrists undergo a four-year undergraduate program in pre-optometry that results in a bachelor's degree, then an additional four-year professional program that results in the Doctor of Optometry, or O.D., degree. The O.D. graduate then must successfully complete both national and state credentialing exams which result in licensure. Optometrists also can complete additional post-doctorate residencies in clinical specialties.

Schools and colleges of optometry are accredited by the Council on Optometric Education, a subsidiary organization of the American Optometric Association, granted authority by the U.S. Department of Education.
