Narayana received M. Sc in Chemistry (1974) from the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani, India, and Ph. D
from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India in Chemical Crystallography (1980) under the supervision of Prof. H. N. Shrivastava. In 1980 he received Robert A. Welch Foundation fellowship to do post-doctoral research at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, USA. In 1981 Narayana moved to Purdue University to join Prof. Patrick Argos research group to learn Virus Crystallography and then in 1984 joined Prof. Charles E. Bugg research lab at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham as a Research Associate to continue his interest in protein crystallography. Narayana remained at Birmingham ever since. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Center for Macromolecular Crystallography/ School of Optometry in 1993 and promoted as an Associate Professor in 1998.
