Proposals Categorized by Implementation

This table is an attempt to place each of the proposals into a broad implementation category as represented by the gray boxes in the goals diagram. The purpose of the classification scheme is to determine whether we have exhausted the set of possible implementation strategies represented by these gray boxes. The implementation categories are defined as follows:

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange). Any method of receiving information from an external source in electronic format.

C/S Link (Client/Server Link to Mainframe). Any method that increases the operational efficiency of the system by providing SQL and relational database access to the mainframe data.

DARS/RM (Degree Audit, Prerequisite/Corequisite checking, Articulation tables, Resource Management). All those functions that provide advisors and students with up-to-date curriculum information for program planning. All those functions that provide program planning at the departmental and school levels.

Web Access. All those functions that provide students, users, and decision makers with browser access to the data in the mainframe or the (proposed) data warehouse.

E-Mail. A progammable e-mail system designed for workflow automation.

DW (Data Warehouse). A single, complete, and consistent store of snapshot data obtained from a variety of sources and made available to end users in a way they understand and can use to make progam decisions.

Organization. The proposals under this category include those that recommend a restructuring of people and/or processes.

Coding. The proposals that fall exclusively in this category represent specific changes to the existing system that require new programs and/or changes to existing databases--these proposals could not be classified in one of the other categories. Some of the proposals that fall under this category also show up in other columns. These are meant to represent alternate classifications that might enhance the functionality.
