Charge to Committee

Dr. O'Neil indicated the committee's responsibilities would be of both a "management" nature because the group will be looked to for very serious recommendations, and of an "advisory" nature because the input will be considered within the hierarchical framework of the deans and provost's office. The objectives of the committee were listed as follows:

university-wide involvement in policies [related to the student-information-system] and decisions
consistency and perspective in establishing policies
security and integrity in data systems
functionality
imagination [do not be bound by what was previously done or constrained by past practices--think above the system]

Members of the committee were introduced and the area each represents described.

Report

David Corliss, explained the committee was designed to operate within the global framework of the outcomes of the strategic planning process. Methods designed to deal with retention and graduation issues demonstrated that the SIS is critical to many efforts such as prerequisite checking, degree audit, monitoring progress toward degree, proper placement, and so forth. Enhancements to the current student information system is one of four new initiatives designed to address these issues. The others include, supporting the advising program, continuation of UNIV 101, and adding faculty to teach developmental and remedial courses. These are in addition to actions already taken such as the addition of scholarship funds, the establishment of the 1-STEP Program, and the restructuring of special studies into UAB Options.

David Corliss outlined the role of SISMAC. The complete text can be found on the newly created SISMAC web site (http://ntopt.opt.uab.edu/sis ideal1.htm). There will be two phases to the committee's assignment. The short term task is to put together a proposal to request resources to enhance the functionality of the existing SIS. The longer term responsibility will be to monitor policy development and the impact of policy changes on the student information system.
